According to data from an analysis by Common Sense Media and the Boston Consulting Group, 36% of Kentucky students – roughly 240,000 – lack adequate internet. Approximately 10% of teachers also lack proper broadband access in their homes. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this digital divide issue, as more Kentuckians are now working remotely and taking online classes. From our youngest learners to our college students, access to the internet is now an imperative. -

Jun 09 2020 Kentucky’s fragile child care ecosystem needs federal support
This week on Innovations in Education, we focused on child care in Kentucky as it relates to COVID-19 closures. On Monday morning, the Prichard Committee, along with a partnership of Kentucky-based organizations (United Way of Kentucky, Kentucky Youth Advocates, Child Care Advocates of Kentucky, Metro United Way, Learning Grove, and United Way of Greater Cincinnati) released the results of a survey to 2,172 child care providers. Much of the conversation on Innovations focused on those results. -
May 19 2020 Student Voice Team leading study on the student impact of COVID-19
This week on Innovations in Education, we held our first all-student panel discussion about how middle and high school students are coping with COVID-19. The Prichard Committee’s Student Voice Team (SVT), started creating the survey on this topic when schools closed for the pandemic in March. Over the past several weeks, the team has developed the survey in consultation with research experts from Kentucky and around the country. -
May 06 2020 Tackling the Decline in College-Going
This week on Innovations in Education, we wanted to better understand the decline in college-going happening in Kentucky and nationally. Since our panel included three superintendents and an education cooperative director, we also talked about plans for high school graduation ceremonies, how remote learning is going, and how districts are planning now for the start of school in the fall.
