Parent Leadership 101 is a 2-day workshop targeted to parents who want to learn more about standards-based education and how to analyze school data. For more information, contact Molly Toney.

Starting Strong Institute is a downward extension of the Parent Leadership Institute for Pre-K partners, implemented in daycare or preschool settings, with teams of teachers, directors and parents.

The Missing Piece of the Proficiency Puzzle is a guided training which examines school culture and climate, as seen through the eyes of all stakeholder groups. It provides a working plan for implementation of school improvement.

 

Parents & Teachers Talking Together (or PT3):

 What is it?

  • A facilitated conversation between parents and teachers, the two groups who know students best

Why do it?

  • To make schools better by having parents and teachers talk, get information about school needs, and create action plans together

How does it happen?

  • Over a dedicated period of time that includes working together as a group, sharing a meal, and addressing two questions

What do we want for our students?

  • What do we need to do to get what we want for our students?

 Who is involved?

  • A coordinator
  • A group of parents (up to 15)
  • A group of teachers (up to 15)
  • Two facilitators

Brief history:

  • Created by the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, Lexington, KY in 1994
  • To date, sponsored over 600 sessions with about 12,000 participants
  • Schools request repeat sessions to assess or redefine needs, involve new parents, and develop action plans to address priorities
  • Trained facilitators can adapt the format to address community needs as well
  • Facilitators can be parents, educators, community leaders, and students trained to implement the process to ensure a positive, productive discussion

 Parents and Teachers As Arts Partners (PTAP) is an extension of our full Parent Leadership Institute, and pairs a parent and a teacher in a project designed to thread the arts throughout other areas of core content to impact student achievement. We are very proud of a recent parent/teacher project, Run for the Roses in the Year of the Horse, at Liberty Elementary in Lexington, Kentucky. Watch this tremendous example by Kaye Hughes and Mary Jane Elliott, of a whole school getting behind a program (5th grader Kacie Hughes designed the video)– we can’t wait to see outcomes in writing!

 

Customized Leadership Training

The Center for Parent Leadership (CPL) is a consulting effort of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. It is an outgrowth of the Committee’s Kentucky-based Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership, which has trained over 1,500 parents since 1997 in school leadership and advocacy skills.

The Center for Parent Leadership bases its work on a set of beliefs and knowledge of current research about parent engagement. CPL knows that when parents are involved at home and at school, children do better in school, and the schools improve. We also know that in order for parents and schools to work best together, both need support. Through our parent leadership work, CPL helps parents gain the information and skills they need to help their children succeed in school in partnership with other parents and school professionals.

The CPL’s primary product is capacity-building consulting leading to replication of its parent leadership institute. Also available are customized training, workshops, and seminars. Click here to learn more.
