2008 Glossary of Kentucky's Education Terms

The Missing Piece of the Proficiency Puzzle: This September 2007 report, issued by the Commissioner's Parent Advisory Council, makes specific recommendations for increasing family and community involvement in schools and provides a parent involvement scoring guide.

The Case for Parent Leadership: This guide, by Anne Henderson and others, draws on research and actual experience with parent engagement programs, like the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership, to document the impact of parent involvement on student achievement. It includes exercises and talking points to help parents and educators understand the importance of parent leadership, the various roles parents can play, and the positive impact they can have as strong partners with schools.

Kentucky School Updates: A Parent/Citizen Guide  for 2006-08 is now available from the Prichard Committee. Designed  to help parents stay current on education issues, the new version  covers subjects from testing to school accountability to school-based decision making, with new information about the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Building Partnerships with Families: Preparation for building partnerships with families, a survey of teachers, teacher educators and school administrators by Kay Wright, Tabitha Daniel and Kathryn Himelreich. Strong majorities of teachers and administrators at all grade levels in Kentucky say they have received insufficient training to work with families to improve student achievement, but most educators would welcome more assistance.
